Chief Poundmaker (Pitikwahanapiwiyin, 1842–1886) was nicknamed the “Peacemaker of the Plains” because, even during the 1885 North-West Resistance, he worked tirelessly to avoid bloodshed and protect both his people and settlers. Despite his efforts for peace, he was imprisoned unjustly—and more than a century later, in 2019, the Canadian government formally exonerated him, recognizing his true legacy as a leader of reconciliation and justice.
